Case Study 10
Spirit
An Icon
Positioning an Outdoor Brand as a Symbol of Belief
01
A Race for Technical Superiority
A Brand Without a Soul
KAELUS is a specialist outdoor equipment brand with exceptional fabric technology.
The brand was caught in an overcrowded market defined by Gore-Tex. Its marketing spoke only in technical specifications, leaving little room for premium pricing or customer loyalty.
Limited Pricing Power
Unable to see a meaningful difference between brands, consumers bought on price, forcing KAELUS into a price war.
No Brand Loyalty
Seen simply as a tool, the brand lacked the relationship and shared beliefs that turn customers into loyal advocates.
The Wrong Brief
"How do we help consumers understand just how advanced our technology is?"
02
A Deeper Need
Overlooked Across the Industry
The Qingmei Future team immediately ruled out another technology-led story.
In-depth psychological interviews with affluent outdoor enthusiasts revealed an emotional need the entire industry had overlooked.
Core insight
People were looking for a symbol that called them into the unknown, with protection as the foundation.
Performance Is the Price of Entry
For urban professionals spending RMB 5,000 on a technical shell, waterproofing is a given. What they seek is meaning.
Spirit Is the Reason to Buy
They buy equipment to find themselves: to escape the cubicle, embrace the unknown and discover who they can become.
KAELUS needed to move beyond selling equipment to offering a sense of identity. The Explorer archetype would give the brand a powerful belief system to embody.
03

04
Brand Identity and Visual System
An Emblem of Exploration
We replaced the brand's generic mountain logo with a substantial, precisely crafted emblem, drawing on the circular and shield-shaped badges of expedition teams.
The emblem combines a compass for direction, a raven for wisdom and foresight, and coordinate axes for precision. On products, it appears as dense embroidery or a die-cast metal badge.
Visual Storytelling on an Epic Scale
We ruled out idyllic outdoor images of smiling walkers on sunlit trails. The visual world had to feel epic: Icelandic glaciers, Patagonian storms and the mist of the Scottish Highlands.
Human figures are small within vast, majestic and sometimes unforgiving landscapes. They stand face to face with nature—and with themselves.
