Cultural Pillars

The Pillars of Our Culture

Six Cultural Pillars Define the CSPC Spirit

Pillar 01

Our Revolutionary Heritage

CSPC traces its roots to the Eighth Route Army’s Shanxi–Chahar–Hebei Military Region medical supplies factory, established in 1938. For 85 years, that revolutionary heritage has remained part of who we are. We honor our history, stay true to our founding purpose, follow the Party’s leadership and make quality medicines, maintaining a clear sense of direction through changing times.

Heritage and Evolution

History

From 1938 to 2025: A Journey of Dedication Spanning 85 Years

1938

Revolutionary Roots

In May 1938, the Health Department of the Shanxi–Chahar–Hebei Military Region began establishing the Central Hebei Military Region Medical Supplies Factory in Ligezhuang, Renqiu County, Hebei Province. Producing absorbent cotton, gauze and first-aid kits for the front line, this predecessor of CSPC laid the foundations of our revolutionary heritage and contributed to the country’s liberation during the war years.

1949

A New Direction

Following the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the enterprise shifted from military supplies to civilian healthcare. Through successive restructurings, it grew into a major pharmaceutical manufacturer, helping lay the foundations of the country’s pharmaceutical industry.

1997

Formation of the Group

Four major pharmaceutical companies—Hebei Pharmaceutical, Shijiazhuang No. 1 Pharmaceutical, No. 2 Pharmaceutical and No. 4 Pharmaceutical—joined forces to establish Shijiazhuang Pharmaceutical Group. The merger created the first national-scale pharmaceutical enterprise of its kind in China, opening a new chapter of growth as a group.

1999

The Shift to Innovation

CSPC established its Central Pharmaceutical Research Institute to develop innovative medicines and advanced formulations. It acquired the technology for NBP from the Institute of Materia Medica at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, committing almost the equivalent of the previous year’s entire profit. This investment launched its strategic shift from active pharmaceutical ingredients to innovative medicines.

2001

A Technological Breakthrough

CSPC expanded its enzymatic 7-ACA production capacity, introducing a capability previously unavailable in China and ending the country’s longstanding reliance on imports. As a key intermediate for semisynthetic antibiotics, this breakthrough strengthened CSPC’s leading position in the antibiotics market.

2003

Access to Global Capital

CSPC successfully listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under stock code 01093.HK, opening a new chapter in its access to international capital. The listing provided funding and a global platform to support rapid growth.

2004

An Innovative Medicine Reaches Patients

NBP (butylphthalide soft capsules) received marketing approval, becoming China’s third domestically developed Class 1 new drug with proprietary intellectual property, following artemisinin and bicyclol, and the first in the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular field. The approval marked a major milestone in CSPC’s transformation into an innovative pharmaceutical company.

2010

An Expanding Portfolio

Butylphthalide and Sodium Chloride Injection received marketing approval for the treatment of mild to moderate acute ischaemic stroke. With both soft capsules and an injectable formulation, the NBP portfolio addressed a broader range of clinical needs and achieved rapid sales growth.

2018

Joining the Hang Seng Index

CSPC Pharmaceutical Group became the first pharmaceutical company to join the Hang Seng Index in its nearly 50-year history, with a market capitalization exceeding HK$100 billion. This milestone recognized the success of the Group’s transformation through innovation and marked a new chapter in its growth.

2019

Dual Listing Platforms

Subsidiary Xinnuowei (300765.SZ) successfully listed on ChiNext, giving CSPC access to both Hong Kong’s red-chip market and mainland China’s A-share market. Later renamed CSPC Innovation Pharmaceutical, it became a key platform for the Group’s innovation strategy.

2024

An mRNA Breakthrough

CSPC’s independently developed COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (SYS6006) received emergency use authorization, becoming the first mRNA vaccine approved in China and the third worldwide. This marked a major breakthrough in the Group’s work at the forefront of biotechnology.

2024

Global Top 50

CSPC ranked 48th among the world’s top 50 pharmaceutical companies, making the list for the third consecutive year. Continued investment in fields such as mRNA and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), alongside FDA clearance for clinical trials of multiple innovative drugs, reflects the progress of its global strategy.

2025

Innovation Drives the Future

CSPC expects to submit nearly 50 innovative medicines for marketing approval over the next five years. With more than 130 innovative drug projects in development and annual R&D investment exceeding RMB 5 billion, the Group is advancing its vision of “Leading Innovation, Building Excellence” as it works to become a global leader in innovative pharmaceuticals.

Our commitment to innovation: bringing more and better medicines from China to the world

Enbipu (Butylphthalide)

China’s third independently developed Class 1 new drug with proprietary intellectual property, and a leading stroke treatment worldwide. Since launch, it has helped more than 10 million stroke patients recover or reduce the burden of their condition.

Protected by nearly 40 Chinese invention patents and multiple international PCT filings, with intellectual property protection across dozens of countries and regions. Its soft capsules have completed Phase II clinical trials in the United States and received FDA orphan drug designation.

CSPC received the China Grand Awards for Industry in 2014, becoming the only pharmaceutical company to win the award across all editions to that date. With annual sales exceeding RMB 6 billion, Enbipu is a core product in the Group’s portfolio.

Winner of the First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the China Patent Gold Award
Xuanning (Levamlodipine Maleate)

An innovative treatment for hypertension, chronic stable angina and variant angina. It was the first product for which a Chinese pharmaceutical company successfully submitted a New Drug Application to the US FDA.

Optical resolution isolates the more potent levo-isomer, improving clinical efficacy while reducing side effects. Xuanning is included in several hypertension treatment guidelines and China’s National Reimbursement Drug List.

A Key Innovation in Cardiovascular Care
Jinyouli (Long-Acting Recombinant Human Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor)

China’s first long-acting recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor injection with proprietary intellectual property, classified as a Class 1 new biological drug. It is used to treat chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.

Compared with short-acting formulations, the long-acting treatment reduces injection frequency and improves patient adherence. Its development has been supported by national initiatives including the “1035 Project” and the Major New Drug Development Program.

A Pioneering Biologic Addressing an Unmet Need in China
Mingfule (Recombinant Human Prourokinase)

A new-generation, targeted thrombolytic that filled a gap in China’s third-generation thrombolytic treatments. It is the only thrombolytic to date that can be administered as a single intravenous bolus, offering convenient use in emergencies and enabling treatment before hospital arrival.

In January 2024, Mingfule was approved for thrombolytic treatment of cerebral infarction, addressing a global gap in third-generation thrombolytics for ischemic stroke. This offers significant potential to improve emergency treatment outcomes and reduce disability in patients with acute myocardial infarction or stroke.
