From "Two Bombs, One Submarine" to Hualong One: a series of major independent breakthroughs
The Founding of China's Nuclear Industry
On January 15, 1955, Chairman Mao Zedong presided over an enlarged meeting of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, which made the strategic decision to develop China's atomic energy industry. China's nuclear industry was born, opening a new chapter in the nation's history.
China's First Atomic Bomb Test
On October 16, 1964, China's first atomic bomb was successfully detonated at Lop Nur in Xinjiang, sending a vast mushroom cloud into the sky. China became the fifth nation to possess nuclear weapons, after the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and France, breaking the major powers' nuclear monopoly.
China's First Hydrogen Bomb Airburst Test
On June 17, 1967, China successfully conducted its first hydrogen bomb airburst test. Just two years and eight months separated its first atomic bomb from its first hydrogen bomb, the fastest progression in the world and a testament to the exceptional talent of China's nuclear scientists and engineers.
China’s First Nuclear Submarine Launched
In September 1971, China launched its first nuclear-powered submarine. The successful development of atomic and hydrogen bombs and a nuclear submarine secured China’s standing as a major power, significantly strengthened national defense and inspired national pride.
Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant Connects to the Grid
On December 15, 1991, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant—the first nuclear power plant independently designed, built and operated by China—was connected to the grid. Celebrated as the “Glory of the Nation,” it marked the start of nuclear power generation in mainland China.
CNNC Established
On June 29, 1999, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) was established through the reorganization of its predecessor, marking a new chapter for China’s nuclear industry.
Construction Begins on the World’s First Hualong One Reactor
