First, Define What Recommendations Help Customers Accomplish

Personalized recommendations can help customers narrow down information, but more frequent recommendations are not necessarily more useful. Businesses first need to establish what readers are looking for, which products or content are actually available, and whether readers can continue searching on their own when recommendations miss the mark.

Discussions at CES 2025 on data, AI, and brand innovation addressed customer experience. This article builds on that public topic to explore recommendation experience design; it does not guarantee the performance of any system.

For example, a business resource library can offer relevant guides based on topics readers select, while retaining options to browse all resources and search independently. Recommendations must not lead customers to believe that options they have not been shown do not exist.

Distinguish Explicit User Choices from System Inferences

Industries, product categories, or reading preferences explicitly selected by users can provide a basis for organizing content; interests inferred by the system from past behavior should remain adjustable. The business needs to determine whether data from different sources may be used, based on its actual circumstances.

If a product serves multiple roles, avoid permanently assigning users to a customer category after a single click. Readers may be comparing products or looking up information for colleagues; the interface should offer ways to change preferences, adjust filters, and return to the full list.

Do not present recommendations as confirmed technical compatibility, contractual terms, or professional conclusions. For specific operating conditions and product versions, direct readers to official documentation or consultation with a staff member.

When recommendations involve commercial partnerships, those responsible should confirm whether the presentation enables readers to distinguish recommended content from promotional information. Specific labeling and data processing requirements should be confirmed against applicable rules and actual business operations; vague wording should not replace necessary explanations.

Make Recommendation Reasons and Data Uses Easy to Understand

Explain in appropriate places which user choices or content relationships inform a recommendation, such as showing related resources because a reader selected a particular topic. Explanations should match the information the system actually uses; do not invent reasons for personalization.

If user information needs to be collected or used, the business's data lead should confirm the purposes, permissions, storage arrangements, and applicable requirements, and provide accurate explanations within the interaction. Do not make absolute privacy protection promises without clearly defined conditions.

Recommendation cards should also make the content title, topic, and next step clear, rather than relying solely on vague, attention-grabbing headlines to encourage clicks. Whether users can identify resource versions and their scope of applicability also affects the experience.

For the same user task, compare whether both recommendations and standard category navigation lead to useful content. If recommendations no longer work, provide ways to search again and view all resources, and record who is responsible for resolving the issue.

Provide Clear Ways to Adjust Recommendations and Opt Out

Design ways to change topics, turn off recommendations, or browse all content again according to the product's actual capabilities. Controls should be easy to find and help users understand what will happen after a change; if certain features require specific settings, explain this in advance.

Recommendations should not obscure the current task or repeatedly interrupt reading. On mobile devices, check that cards, buttons, and dismissal controls are visible; verify whether users with different abilities can complete the actions on real devices and with applicable assistive technologies.

When the system cannot determine suitable content, it can offer a category directory and a way to contact a staff member instead of forcing a definitive answer. Recommendations involving purchases or professional judgment need to state the relevant conditions and how to obtain further confirmation.

After content or product information is updated, check that recommendation titles, summaries, and landing pages are updated accordingly. If older versions remain visible, clearly state their applicable conditions so readers do not mistake older resources for current product documentation.

Test with Specific Tasks and Maintain the Experience

Ask participants to find a particular type of resource, change their preferences, and return to the full directory, and observe whether they understand the basis for recommendations and how to control them. Record devices, scenarios, and unresolved issues; a small number of tests can only reflect observations under specific conditions.

When products or content are taken offline, update recommendation sources accordingly to avoid sending users to broken pages. Qingmei Future can assist with information architecture and interaction design; data use and specific technical implementation must be confirmed by the relevant people responsible within the business.
