PERSPECTIVES / Space and Service Experience

Information in retail spaces needs a hierarchy too

Brand expression, product comparison and service guidance each have a distinct role.

Research Notes

Brand image, product comparison, and service guidance carry different tasks. This article explores the relationship between content, design, and use, offering a judgment framework applicable to project discussions.

First layer establishes recognition.

Expression at distance and entry confirms brand and category for customers. Imagery, signage, and spatial relationships should remain clear, not buried under promotional overlay.

Second layer supports comparison.

Product differences, use cases, prices, and specs appear at relevant display locations. Information organization should follow purchase decision sequence, letting display and explanation reinforce each other.

Third layer connects to service.

Inquiry, experience, payment, and aftercare need clear access points. Brand experience includes these daily handoffs; spatial design requires coordination with operations.

Bringing it into project discussions

  • Arrival: Can first-time visitors confirm their location?
  • Navigation: Is guidance continuous and clear at key decision points?
  • Maintenance: Can names, events, and temporary changes be updated promptly?

Bring these questions to real materials and use cases, recording the current version, the rationale for changes and feedback from use. When every adjustment has a clear basis, the team can keep applying these judgments in future work.
